From Barbara Edsall:
The Bakersfield Games are, for me, simply Big Fun! I enjoyed them first as an attender, starting about 10 years ago. My husband and I met the incomparable Herald Yule, Eleanor Clark, and others who have faithfully supported the KCSS and the Games. I love everything about them--the music, the bagpipes (shouldn't that come under music?), the vendor booths, the food, meeting friends. One year, after we had spent a lot of money for a kilt in my husband's family tartan, for his birthday, I sashayed up to a booth at the Bakersfield Games and found a kilt in new wool, in my size, in the same tartan, for $40. I've never let him live it down.
In more recent years, we have performed at the Games. Last year and this year, we have played music as High Ground. I love performing at the Bakersfield Games! The audiences are friendly and the time of year is perfect. When we are not playing, I get to listen to other musicians and generally enjoy the Games myself. It just can't be beat!
From Dale Stewart:
I know a couple - he was black, she was white. She wanted to go to the Scottish games. He was not enthusiatic saying, "That's only for white people." She talked him into going. After passing through the admission gate, the first thing they saw was a pipe band with 2 black drummers dressed in kilts. They stayed the whole day and had a great time. Moral: Everyone is Scottish for the Day.
From Betty Stewart:
When the mines opened up in Mexico, miners from Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland migrated to Mexico. In doing this, many marriages took place - so there are Mexicans with Scottish blood. If you are in doubt about your ancestry come and vist Clan Tents and the Genealogy table in the Tea Room and check for yourself.
From Billy and Dawn Nuckles:
After attending the Bakersfield Scottish Games for the first time and seeing our Clan booth, we were so excited that we decided to take the family and visit Scotland. We visited the historic site of our ancestors and were so moved! We will never miss the Bakersfield Scottish Games!
