Callanish Pipe Band of Modesto is a Grade IV Competition band and was formed in the summer of 2003 under the leadership of Pipe Major John Mitchell of Toronto, Canada. Callanish is made up of pipers and drummers throughout the Central Valley who have an interest in performing and competing with musical excellence. The band wears the Scottish-American Tartan; red, white, and blue of the American Flag combined with the Scottish Saltire. The name for the band is taken from a circle of stones on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. To the members of Callanish, these stones represent the qualities needed to make up a top band: Endurance, Perseverance through Adversity, and Strength of Character.
